A theatrical producer puts aside his own success to boost the career of a talented singer.
The Duke Is Tops features Lena Horne in her film debut.
The film was later released in 1943 under the title The Bronze Venus.
The casts and production teams of these films were almost all black, and the music reflected current tastes in jazz and rhythm and blues.
Lena Horne did not attend the June 1938 NAACP charity premiere in Pittsburgh because she was not paid for her work in this picture.
The film was shot in ten days.
