The Battle of The Century (1927)
American Silent Short.
A scheming fight manager attempts to collect insurance on his puny fighter by causing an accident. Things don’t go according to plan, and the situation escalates into a pie-throwing battle of epic proportions.
The Battle of The Century is famous for its use of more than 3,000 cream pies (although the Guinness Book of Records claims that as many as 10,000 may have been used) in the film’s climactic pie fight.
Lou Costello makes one of his earliest screen appearances as an extra in the boxing match sequence. He is visible standing close to the ring.
The Battle of the Century was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
