In Old Arizona (1928)
American Pre-Code Western.
The Cisco Kid, a charming, happy-go-lucky bandit plays a cat-and-mouse game with the sheriff trying to catch him while he romances a local beauty.
It was the first major Western to use the new technology of sound-on-film and the first talkie to be filmed outdoors.
Director Raoul Walsh, who was to star as The Cisco Kid, lost an eye in an accident shortly before filming.
Some footage of Walsh, in chase scenes and long shots, remains in the film.
Buddy Roosevelt was then cast in the role, but he broke his leg before the picture was set to start up filming again.
He was replaced by Warner Baxter, who managed to stay in one piece and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
In Old Arizona was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
