God’s Little Acre (1958)
.
In the 1950s, a poor Georgia cotton farmer and his sons search for the gold presumably buried on the farm by their great-grandfather, but problems related to poverty, infidelity, unemployment, and booze threaten to destroy their family.
Based on Erskine Caldwell’s 1933 novel of the same name, the film was as controversial as the novel, although unlike its source material it was not subjected to prosecution for obscenity.
According to an article in the 8/9/57 edition of “The Hollywood Reporter”, Anthony Mann and Security Pictures were denied permission to film on location in Georgia. Civic and business leaders feared the film of Erskine Caldwell’s 1933 novel would portray the state in a negative light.
God’s Little Acre was the film debut of Tina Louise.
This film has been preserved and restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
